Wedding Favours They Will Keep: Ankara Mirrors

Wedding Favours They Will Keep: Ankara Mirrors

You've been dreaming about this day since you were young. The dress. The walk in. The hush that falls over a room when you appear in it. Some version of that day has been playing in your head for the longest time - and now it's finally yours to create, down to the last detail.

And in our community, a wedding was never meant to whisper. We go big. We go beautiful. We go all out — because when everyone who loves you is gathered in one room, nothing about that day should feel mediocre, or off a shelf. Least of all the small thing you press into every guest's hand to say thank you as they leave.

Which is exactly where some favours let the day down. You know, as soon as they get home, they will end up in the drawer, never to be used — every home's got one. A sugared almond gone soft, a candle nobody's lit, bought in bulk from some  catalogue. And the worst thing is a guest can tell there was no real thought put into it in about four seconds flat, even if she's too polite to say so.

Not this favour. Not the one covered in Ankara, with a mirror on the back, and a story behind it worth telling.

Why a Mirror, Of All Things

A mirror was never neutral in our tradition. Long before it sat in anyone's handbag, it sat in the hands of Kongo craftspeople in Central Africa — set into minkisi, power figures carved by an artist and activated by a nganga, a ritual specialist. The mirror wasn't decoration. The Saint Louis Art Museum and the Met both note the same thing: it stood for the surface of water, the line between this world and the realm of the ancestors — a place of protection, of true sight.

You don't need the history lesson to feel it, though. You already know a mirror is never just glass. It's the thing she checks before she walks into a room like she owns it — and on this day, of all days, that's exactly what she's about to do. Hand a guest one of our mirrors at a wedding and you're not handing them a wedding favour, you're showing them same care that went into every other part of the wedding, went into this too. You are letting them know their presence is truly apprecaited. Interested to find out more?

Why They Work As Favours

A favour has one job: get remembered without asking to be. That rules out most of what fills a favour table. Sweets get eaten by the end of the night. Candles get regifted. What survives is something small enough to live in a bag for years, and useful enough that nobody questions keeping it.

Round, pocket-sized, one side Ankara fabric and one side mirrored glass — these were built to be carried, not displayed once and shelved. And because every mirror is a different print, hand-picked at random, no two guests at your table compare notes and realise they got the same thing. That's not a small detail here — it's the same instinct behind going big and beautiful in the first place. Nothing about the day was ever going to be one-size-fits-all, so why would the favour be?

Gifting-first is the whole point, too. You're not asking anyone to buy anything for themself — you're the one doing the choosing, on behalf of every woman who'll open her bag on some random Tuesday eight months from now, catch her own reflection, and remember exactly whose wedding it was. One-Of-A-Kind, On Purpose

Every mirror is hand-covered in our London studio. Round, glass on one side, approximately 58mm, made by hand using Ankara fabric from our own pieces and from the independent UK dressmakers we partner with to ensure we get they greatest variety of authentic African fabrics. Nothing here comes off a production line — every mirror is unique.

That's not a marketing line. It's just what happens when you cut from remnants instead of running one bolt of fabric through a hundred identical favours. The trade-off is you can't order "the blue one" for every guest. The upside is nobody's favour looks like the one next to it — which is the same energy behind going big for a day like this in the first place. You don't scale down the parts that matter, and you don't let the small things be an afterthought either.

However You're Celebrating

The mirrors work the same way whether it's a bridal shower, an engagement party, or the wedding day itself. Whatever the event, however many guests, bulk enquiries are welcome — there's no fixed minimum. Email us DM us or fill out this form, and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.

Where She Comes Home To Herself

It's not just decor. It's identity — and on a day that's been years in the making, a favour is one of the smallest, most honest ways to hand a piece of that identity to everyone who showed up for you. Every guest who opens that bag gets a beat of seeing herself properly, maybe for the first time all day. That's worth more than most of what fills a favour table, and it costs about the same.

Ready to plan yours? Email or DM us for bulk pricing and lead times — favour orders typically turn around in 1–2 weeks, with rush options available if your date's closer than that. A day you've dreamed about since you were small deserves every detail to actually mean something. Join our list to hear first when new prints land — where she comes home to herself, one bag at a time.
