'Night Market': A Mirror Made for the YAAD Clubhouse This Black History Month

Some pieces start with a fabric. This one started with a place.

This October, Home Sweet Soul is part of the YAAD Clubhouse Black History Month Residency in Hammersmith, and I made a new piece especially for it: our Night Market Wall Art Mirror, a 76cm statement mirror.

About our Night Market Wall Art Mirror

Night Market is reminiscent of evenings at Makola, Balogun and Coronation Market: lanterns glowing over the cloth stalls, colour stacked high, and a place that feels like home the moment you step into it. Gold, coral and sky-blue diamonds glow across a midnight ground, pleated by hand into a sunburst and finished with a border of cowrie shells around the mirror.

It's a piece about memory and belonging: the places that raised us, and the way they stay with us wherever we end up.

About YAAD

In Jamaican Patois, "yaad" is an affectionate word for home: your house, your roots, your comfort. That's exactly why this space felt so right for Home Sweet Soul. YAAD is building a makerspace, co-working hub and members' club for West London's makers, creatives and founders, people who deserve a space that recognises what they're building. As a West London maker myself, I couldn't agree more.

The Night Market Wall Art Mirror will be on display at the YAAD Clubhouse throughout October, alongside a full month of events, including:

  • DIY Waistbeads Workshop: Friday 2 October
  • Black History Month Quiz & Karaoke: Friday 9 October
  • Sew & Repair Lab: Friday 16 October
  • Afro-Fusion Dance Class: Friday 23 October
  • "It's Someone's Birthday Somewhere" Social, with DJ and games: Friday 30 October
  • Open Decks every Saturday, plus beat-making workshops and a Tech x Creative Build-a-thon

Residency access is £45 for Fridays only or £60 for full access. Find all the details at yaad.space and @yaad.irl on Instagram.

Come and find Night Market, and a community that feels like home.
